2008-03-14, Tier 3/Tier 4 Marine Locomotive Engine Standards
CHICAGO, March 14, 2008. The Engine Manufacturers Association (EMA) responded to the United States Environmental Protections Agency’s (EPA) announcement today that the agency has finalized new emission standards for marine engines and locomotives by indicating that engine manufacturers are ready to tackle the challenges ahead. The new standards announced today will significantly reduce emissions from new marine and locomotive engines and establish very challenging stretch goals for the industry.

Chicago, August, 21, 2007. On August 20th, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals issued a decision in the so-called fleet rules case. The fleet rules were adopted by the South Coast Air Quality Management District (AQMD) to control the purchase of vehicles for private and public fleets. This week’s decision remanded the case back to the lower court, but upheld the district court’s ruling that the fleet rules as applied to state and local governments are not preempted by the federal Clean Air Act due to market participation considerations.

The Engine Manufacturers Association (EMA) today released a study demonstrating that suppliers of urea, a key reagent used in pollution control equipment to reduce emissions of nitrogen oxides, can develop a retail infrastructure to support the use of the pollution control technology in diesel trucks, buses, and cars.

The specifications for biodiesel were developed by EMA to identify a standard biodiesel blend fuel with consistent properties suitable to be used for testing and evaluation. The development and release of the specification does not imply or constitute any endorsement for use of B20 blends by EMA or its member companies. The specification is not an approved national fuel standard, and it should not be used as such. There are no quality or approval claims associated with any biodiesel blend fuel, including those that meet the test specification requirements identified by EMA.

The Engine Manufacturers Association (EMA) today announced the release of a test specification for biodiesel fuel to facilitate testing and evaluation of how blended biodiesel fuels perform in today’s clean-burning diesel engines. The EMA specifications establish technical requirements for blends of petroleum fuel and biodiesel fuel that can be used to assess the effects of such biodiesel fuels on engine performance, durability and emissions.
