EMA members manufacture internal combustion engines that are used in a wide variety of applications, including:
· Trucks and buses
· Farm, construction, and industrial equipment
· Marine vessels
· Locomotives
· Lawn, garden and utility equipment, and
· Electric generators, and other stationary applications
EMA serves as the voice of its 27 member companies on domestic and international public policy, legislative and regulatory issues, and works cooperatively with regulatory agencies, including the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the California Air Resources Board (ARB), international regulatory agencies, and state governments, to develop and implement cost-effective and technologically feasible emission and fuel regulations to reduce emissions from the engines produced by its members.
Formed in 1968, EMA's members include the leading engine manufacturers from the United States, Europe, and Japan. As a member-driven trade association, the management of EMA is based on a committee structure that includes a Board of Directors composed of a representative from each member company, an Executive Committee appointed by the members to direct and manage EMA activities, and a series of committees that are organized along major engine product-lines, such as heavy-duty on-highway trucks and buses, nonroad mobile equipment, marine and locomotives engines, grounds care and utility equipment, stationary engines, and fuels. Each committee is comprised of member company representatives.
Association operations are carried out by a small staff of professional and administrative personnel who represent and promote EMA positions with various outside organizations and government regulators. EMA is based in Chicago with a satellite international office in Germany.
EMA also sponsors scientific and technical research to improve engine performance and reduce emissions, to develop more accurate emissions measurement and testing methods, to assure the improvement and compatibility of fuels, and to improve the overall environmental performance of advanced engine technologies.
Through research, development, and advocacy, EMA members have successfully worked with government and regulatory agencies to reduce emissions from internal combustion engines by over 99% since EMA was formed over 40 years ago. EMA and its members are the leaders in providing efficient and low-emissions engine technologies to an environmentally conscious world.
